The Loved One
It is hard to place any kind of meaningful description to this film because it takes cultural, social, and moral ideals and stomps on them. Additionally, the casting of the film goes against type, with Jonathan Winters, for example, as a dark, imposing religious force. The acting is superb, intense and, at times, intentionally campy and over-the-top. Each scene seems outrageous and, at times, ridiculous but inexorably moves the characters, and the audience, to a lip-biting conclusion.Terry Southern, one of the credited screen writers, was also responsible for Kubrick's Dr Strangelove, Barbarella, Candy, Easy Rider, The Magic Christian, and many other wacky films. Knowing this may help to place it in some familiar context. Of all his films, though, this is the darkest.
If you are disturbed or offended by the funeral business, death in general, dead pets, or slightly veiled hints at necrophilia then you might want to give this one a miss. If you're brave and open-minded, however, I highly recommend this truly strange and wonderful film.

Bill Buford's-Among The Thugs
Buford, a native of the United States, is the editor of the London-based literary magazine Granta . In 1982 he witnessed the takeover of a train, a football special, by English soccer thugs. He reveals how fascination for this distinctly English phenomenon of "soccer hooliganism" led him to follow a group of violent supporters of the Manchester United Red Devils. Buford is accepted into the group and in time seems to develop a sixth sense about impending violence or when things, in English parlance, are "going to go off." Particularly riveting is his account of the aftermath of a match in Turin, Italy, where 200 or so Manchester supporters marched through the ancient streets leaving fire and destruction in their wake. Buford's original theories on football violence, fraught with notions about disenfranchised youth and the frustration of the working class, are forever dashed. He concludes that the English working class is dead, and what remains is a culture so vapid that " . . . it pricks itself so that it has feeling, burns its flesh so that is has smell." Public and academic libraries should have this.- Mark Annichiarico, "Library Journal"

Spanish Moss+American Gold

Founded in 2006 Spanish Moss is an online boutique specializing in statement vintage pieces for tastemakers, artists, and IT girls (or just those in spirit). Spanish Moss also features a carefully curated collection of the most quality and progressive independent designers in the Shop New section of the site. In addition, Spanish Moss designs and produces a signature clothing line - American Gold - that is manufactured in California. Finally, Spanish Moss hosts the SMV Mag, a blog collective written by carefully selected fashionistas and SMV girls to keep you updated on the latest street style and runway trends, art, literature, music, and progressive culture.
American Gold is a collection of vintage inspired clothing produced in the Golden State of California. Always made of the finest silks, crochets, and cottons, each material in the American Gold collection is handpicked to construct a supremely soft garment of the highest quality and attention to detail. Emboldened by an American girl's love for nostalgia, American Gold is inspired by: Indian summers, sleeping under the stars in Joshua Tree, collections of taxidermy and south western trinkets, roadside flea markets, listening to the Rolling Stone's "Moonlight Mile" on repeat, whiskey soaked nights in Nashville, musing over Marianne Faithful & Anita Pallenberg, sleeping past checkout in old motel rooms, first kisses, discovering Emmylou Harris for the first time, summer flings, wearing sequins in the daytime, humid summers spent lounging on wraparound porches, sleepovers, playing hooky, 4 pm purple thunder storms, re-reading Walt Whitman, living free, and making new best friends wherever you go.
